We had a fabulous assembly on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break. The Calliope Brass Ensemble performed for us. They combine their music with storytelling to create an exciting combination. They also use puppetry to help share their stories. We learned about how different sounds and tempos can change the emotion and meaning of a story. The children loved hearing songs that they recognized and were completely engaged as they felt different emotions throughout the performance. The most exciting part of the performance came at the end when several children felt that the performers would love the Halloween story that the students created with Mrs. D during Halloween. So three kiddos ran through the hallways (which was exciting in itself!) to get the Spooky Halloween story before dismissal. The whole class then presented the book to the ensemble as a gift and let them know that it might be a good story to put to music and use in their upcoming shows. The musicians were overcome with the students' generosity. They read the story and asked various students about what parts they contributed to. I think the students felt like they were talking to rockstars and in return became rock stars!!! Proud teacher moment as the kiddos took ownership and confidence in their work and felt compelled to share with others. It was truly a magical experience to watch the interaction and the excitement!
