Free Play with Duplos after snack lead to some wonderful teamwork and exploration in architecture, mathematics, and engineering. Students worked together to build a Christmas tree and after an accidental crash, redesigned their plan. They worked together to problem solve and build a tower taller than their teacher. After great success, the tower easily "towered over" their 5'5" tall teacher! So, of course, they invited Mr. Pane in to see if the tower was taller than him. How exciting to see that it was!! In the end, Mr. Pane asked how many blocks we thought there were in our tower. After another accidental crash, we collected all of the pieces and brainstormed ways to count the blocks. One student made the great suggestion that we all work together to make groups of ten blocks and then count by tens. Success! Our tower ended up being 125 blocks tall. That is the same as 12 groups of ten and 1 group with 5 which is "half of ten"!
