The excitement was palpable as we anticipated our first field trip! The bus ride was a big hit. Kiddos were high energy as we drove to JMS. The ride back, however, was a bit quieter as they were tired out from the busy morning! We met up with our friends from JMS and Warren. Together we learned about what it feels like to have limited vision. We also learned some sign language and noticed that some of the signs in our school have braille. We also talked about how some students, such as those with down syndrome, are difficult to understand. We tried to talk to each other with marshmallows in our mouths to simulate the sensation of having a larger tongue. It was difficult to talk and was tricky to understand the person speaking. We learned that it is okay to ask someone to repeat themselves. It shows that we are interested. We talked about respectful ways to ask questions and to offer help. Two other people came to JMS to share their experiences. One gentleman had limited vision and used a guide dog named Joel to help him walk. Joel was attentive and helpful and LOVED his treats! Another gentleman is a coach and physical education teacher at Oak Hill Adaptive Sports and Fitness. He has cerebral palsy and has difficulty walking at times. However, it definitely did not hinder him from being active, capable, and strong!
Several students are writing informational books about frogs. Of course, we had to act out how a frog moves by playing Leap Frog!
