Kindergarten has been "commissioned" to create books that might help the preschoolers learn how to draw people. Our first step in creating our How to Books was to brainstorm as a class about all of the important elements needed when drawing people. Next, we thought about what order would make the most sense when adding the different features. Finally, we went off on our own to create our own glossary of body parts. Our next step will be to begin sketching and writing about the various steps needed to create a successful illustration. We have been talking about the difference between sketches and drawing with detail. Sketches are quick pencil drawings that let us get our ideas on paper before we forget them. After we have completed our writing, we then go back and add detail and additional color and elements to best show our thinking. We noticed that when we spend so much time on our illustrations first, we sometimes lose momentum and we get too tired to finish the writing. Sketching first, writing, second and adding color and detail last helps us get all of our ideas on paper while we still have energy! We can't wait to see how each person in the class decides to create their How to Book and we can't wait to share our work with Miss Gray, Mrs. Corsetti and the preschoolers! Ask me about seesaw sharing! We love to get together after a writing session and share our progress with a friend!

On Friday, we visited the 6th grade's Egypt Museum. Our 6th grade book buddies worked so hard on their projects and were excited to share them with the school! We saw so many amazing projects. Some of the students made pyramids, mummies, displays with plants, spices and natural medicines, models of Cleopatra and the Sphinx and even traditional Egyptian food! The whole school came out to visit and support their great work!
Our next unit in Math, we will be learning about geometry. We will be identifying, sorting and exploring 2D and 3D shapes. Mrs. Bills, our Music teacher, helped introduce the new unit by teaching us a variety of shape songs. Mrs. Keilty even came in to class and sang along with us. Both Mrs. Keilty and Mrs. Bills were very impressed with our initial brainstorming list. We realized that we already know so much about shapes! We are excited to learn more songs and to explore geometry! What a great math vocabulary word!
