We have been learning about writing our lowercase letters. Mrs. Leiffert came in and shared the House Family story with us. Our new handwriting paper has a house shape with an attic, a house and a basement. We learned that there are different ways to think about letters, not just the uppercase and lowercase. The uppercase letters are Grown ups and can visit in the attic and the house by themselves. The children can only visit in the main part of house (the middle part of the paper) by themselves. Teenagers (like the letters t, b, l, d) , however, can visit in the house and the attic because they are a little older. Who can visit in the basement? Only the pets can visit in the "dirty" basement, because they have tails that hang down low (g,p,q, y)! We are having fun practicing our new writing on our new white board mats!

Our day started out as usual with our Dance Party Friday! After our friends from the other schools arrived, we met in the gym for an assembly. Senora Ruiz and her children, Siobhan, Danny and Brigitte played several traditional Irish songs on their violins and hand drum. We were so surprised to see Sonora Ruiz playing the violin. Her family is very talented! We then enjoyed a performance of Irish Step Dancing. We learned that they use two different types of shoes, hard heeled tap shoes and soft soled shoes. Their feet moved so quickly but their arms stayed still by their sides. Several times it looked as if they were floating across the gym floor! In the end, students that wanted to try dancing were invited onto the floor to try a partner dance called, Shoe the Donkey. Several kindergarteners were willing to give it a try! After the performance, we met back in our classroom with the other kindergarteners. We enjoyed sharing our room with our new friends. They seemed to have fun playing in our different centers. They loved our loft and tree house and had fun playing in our house corner! While half of the group played in our classroom, the other half went across the hall and had a chance to to learn about little robots called, Ozobots. We decorated shamrocks with red, blue, black and green colored lines. The ozobots then followed the different colored marker paths. It was very cool to watch the robots light change color as it traveled on a new line. We were wondering how the ozobot could tell the difference between the different colored lines. It was a mystery, but we hope we get to borrow the ozobots from James Morris so we can do some more exploring! After our busy morning, we were happy to head down to the cafeteria to have lunch. Miss Sally and Miss Amy made Shepherd's Pie and yummy green smoothies! Before our friends left, we met back to the classroom for a final read aloud. Mrs. Brown, from Warren School, read a story called, Leprechauns Never Lie. She used a really fun Irish accent that kept us excited to hear more! Even though we had a great time with our friends, we enjoyed a quiet afternoon back in our classroom! We enjoyed building, "baking" with play dough, painting, drawing, singing and reading St Patrick's Day books and many other activities. For our final project of the day, we sorted, counted and graphed the cereal, Lucky Charms. We worked together to figure out what each marshmallow matched the pictures on our graph. Of course, we also enjoyed eating some of our special treat!
What a surprise to come back to school after our snow days and find that a leprechaun caused a lot of mischief in our classroom. We made Leprechaun traps last week with Mrs. Farrell during Makerspace/Library. She brought our traps to the classroom for us but our traps didn't work. None of them caught the leprechaun. However, he did leave gold coins, lollipops and his hat in our class. He even left footprints throughout our room. We had to sort out all of the gold coins to figure out if there were enough for each of us to have one. We noticed that there were 28. Enough for us each to get one but not 2. The extras are now in our house corner for us all to use! We were wondering if the leprechaun was causing mischief and hiding in other parts of the school! Mrs. Farrell found him in the library! Luckily Mr. Leary was brave enough to catch the leprechaun and set him free.
