We spent the week engulfed in the smells of ginger and cinnamon! Not only did we make gingerbread cookies, we wrote our sight words in cinnamon “sand”, we created a bakery with gingerbread play dough, as well as finding and putting gingerbread letters in alphabetical order and reenacting the story through song and dance. We read and compared various Gingerbread stories including, Jan Brett’s The Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Bear, Gingerbread Cowboy and The Ninjabread Boy, just to name a few. Throughout the week we made connections and discussed the similarities and differences between each story. The highlight, of course, was our gingerbread hunt after finding out that our cookies escaped from the oven! There’s nothing better than getting the whole school involved in our pursuit!

After snack, children meet on the carpet and design and build with Duplos as they wait for the others to finish eating. In the beginning of the year, each student would build their own structure, happy to work independently. However, as the year has progressed, solitude has taken a back seat! The designs have become more intricate, the collaboration greater and the desire to revisit and reimagine their work from day to day inspiring.
Mrs. Keilty joined us as our Mystery Reader last week. She read Harvey Slumfenberger's Christmas Present. We made predictions about what gift Santa left for Harvey and then decorated his present. After this read aloud, we had many ideas about how to bring Christmas into the classroom. Our favorite of course was the children's suggestion to turn our House Corner into Santa's Workshop. They created a list of supplies and props that we would need and got to work decorating and preparing the area. Posters were designed, a work bench for the elves was set up, a sleigh was built and the tree was decorated! Kindergarteners are as busy as the elves in the North Pole!
