Each day, we focus on the Star Helper's first name. The Star Helper leads us through the Name Game, reading the chart and telling us what to do. Not only do we spell, count and clap a students name, we also learned that words are made up of letters and that sentences are made up of words. The Star Helper practiced pointing to each word in a sentence as the whole class followed along. In the end, the Star Helper was given the challenge to unmix the letters of his or her name and put them in the correct order. Not surprising, but I could not trick any of the students with the spelling of their names!

Our Letter buckets had an accident and all of the pieces fell out. There was a jumble of objects but we weren't sure where to put them. We worked together to set up a letter factory. Students \ put all of the buckets in alphabetical order on the counter. Next, they found items, identified the item's name and had to sound out the first letter. Next, they placed the letter in the appropriate container. After all of the objects were sorted, students then had to double check their work. Each student chose a container to check that the contents were in the correct place. What could have been a tedious task for the teacher, became an amazing learning experience for the children. Many hands make light (and meaningful!) work.
