During Math, we explored the idea of longer and shorter. Students played a game with a partner in which they chose a light saber (a drinking straw) from a pile and compared the lengths. After flipping a coin with longer and shorter written on each side, the students with the winning length won the battle! Instead of Star Wars, we enjoyed a morning of friendly Math Wars!

We are almost done reading Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox. During one of the final scenes, the "digger animals" join together for a celebratory feast. During our Read Aloud, our Star Helper recorded how many animals were in attendance. We practiced using tally marks and grouping our marks in groups of five. Afterwards, we counted by fives to determine how many showed up to celebrate. We are also using tally marks to record how much our Amaryllis is growing each day.
We have begun our second round of Enrichment Clusters. Students are taking part in Science themed classes every Friday afternoon. Often the students are in groups with children from other grades. The above pictures show some kindergarteners and first graders taking part in the exploration of various building materials during the STEM Box cluster. We have talked about engineering and what an engineer does. We also have shared ideas about our successes and failures when using various building materials. Students have created houses, boats, garden fences, towers out of paper cups, lego vehicles and even the American Ninja Warrior course out of clothes pins! As the clusters continue, students will take the lead to extend their thinking and combine their resources to build and design new challenges.
