It was an exciting day in Kindergarten! We finished our most recent Read Aloud, The Fantastic Mr. Fox written by Roald Dahl. I think I was just as excited as the students anticipating each day, wondering what would happen next with Bunce, Boggis, and Bean and how Mr. Fox would outwit the farmers. Each time we read, students would recall the last chapter and retell important details. In our discussions, we talked about the various characters, the setting of the story, and what the main problem was and predicted how the problems might be resolved. Although wee finished the book, students aren't ready to leave this wonderful story. We have decided to turn our block corner into the underground tunnels for the various animals and our "Magic Tree House" is becoming the tree on top of the hill that originally housed the Fox family. Our puppeteers have also begun creating puppets of the various characters and are working on retelling the story in our puppet theater! We ended our day with a celebration, just like Mrs. Fox's final feast! We drank apple cider "from Farmer Bean's storehouse" and ate pretzels (in place of chickens)! In the end, students worked on their fine motor skills coloring, cutting and gluing a fox puzzle and putting all of the pieces in sequential order. We had some terrific writers using their upper and lowercase letters to title their creations with the name of one of our new favorite characters, Fantastic Mr. Fox!

Students enjoyed playing Double Compare during our Math Workshop this week. This card game is similar to War, however, each player turns over two cards at a time and the person with the highest total, wins the turn. We have been practicing how to count on from a number rather than always starting at one, how to decompose and compose numbers while using ten frames to help in their thinking. We have also been making number sentences (equations) to match each time we flip our cards or toss our chips! I was very lucky yesterday when a couple of my mathematician friends were eager to help me sort and organize our number cards. We are now ready to access our materials whenever the math bug hits!! Find some playing cards at home and enjoy a game of Double Compare with your family. Have fun! Our interest in Pippi Longstocking started thanks to Hannah's Mystery Bag item. She was so excited to share her favorite character, Pippi Longstocking with the class. Because Hannah described Pippi with such enthusiasm, we decided as a class that we needed to read this book! The book she brought in, however, was written in Swedish. We realized that we needed to get an English version. Thanks to the Hickory Stick Bookstore in Washington, we are ready to read this fun story and meet this zany character! Perfect timing that we just filled our Warm Fuzzy Jar. After our last celebration, students voted and decided to celebrate with a movie and popcorn. Today was the perfect cold and rainy day for a movie! How perfect to watch the movie version of Pippi Longstocking (found on Youtube) and then eventually read Astrid Lindgren's book. I can't wait to see the connections that the students make between the different versions of the same story. We have already begun to chart Pippi's character traits.
The kiddos had a great discussion today anticipating how and if Pippi will be a bit different in the book. Students realized, after we brainstormed, that although Pippi was a bit naughty and mischievous, she was still very kind. We are curious to see if our chart will remain the same or if we will have to add some different traits for Pippi! |
